"Voices Of Lombard Street" ambient 5.1 surround sound

Roles: Producer, recordist, engineer, exhibit design/installation

Project Description:

The Jewish Museum of Maryland, seeking to create a rich immersion experience for its new
exhibit, "Voices of Lombard Street," commissioned an ambitious installation of
environmental surround sound to give visitors the sense that they had actually stepped back
in time and onto Baltimore's historic Lombard Street. Created on a tight budget, the design
called for the creative installation of five consumer 5.1 surround sound systems, five DVD
players, over 600 feet of wire, and the creation of sound mixes that evenly distributed ambient
sound while pinpointing location- and artifact-specific sounds. Locations ranged from a busy
1930s street scene, to a quiet apartment interior, to a modern demolition site.
